Local Immunisation Taskforce seeks Community Member

13 June 2013

News Release

Northern Sydney Medicare Local is calling for a member of the community to join its newly established Immunisation Taskforce, which will make recommendations and put in place actions to improve immunisation services and rates in the Hornsby, Ku-ring-gai, Ryde and Hunters Hill areas.

Made up of healthcare professionals including Doctors, Registered Nurses and Council Immunisation Coordinators, the 11-person taskforce would like to ensure an Immunisation advocate from the community is being represented in its membership.

"We are seeking a member of the community who is willing to lend their voice to this important cause. We need someone who is interested in the area of Immunisation and the role it plays in a healthy community, said Ms Cynthia Stanton, Immunisation Taskforce Chairperson and Northern Sydney Medicare Local Director General Practice.

They might be a parent, a carer, a teacher or involved in a childhood-related service such as childcare centre, playgroup, or sports association, added Ms Stanton.

An important focus for the Taskforce will be ensuring parents and guardians have access to a good balance of information on immunisation and understanding what are the myths and what is reality. Some of the work the Taskforce will do will include monitoring data rates and assisting with timely and accurate reporting to the Australian Childhood Immunisation Record.

Earlier this year a report, The National Health Performance Authority, Healthy Communities Immunisation rates for children in 2011- 2012, found that children aged under the age of five who lived in the Hornsby, Ku-ring-gai, Hunters Hills and Ryde areas, had an average immunisation rate of 90 per cent.

The Immunisation taskforce first met in April 2013 and is scheduled to meet again in August 2013. The closing date for submitting an Immunisation Taskforce (Community Member) - Expression of Interest is 5 July 2013.
