Organ and Tissue Authority Community Awareness Grants now Available

11 June 2013

Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing Shayne Neumann today announced the availability of $463,000 in Community Awareness Grants to support community-based activities promoting organ and tissue donation.

Applicants can apply for funding to support community-based activities during DonateLife Week 2014 (23 February 2 March), or targeted activities to support the Organ and Tissue Authoritys national community awareness and education program.

Mr Neumann said that community support is a key element in educating communities on the facts about organ and tissue donation, how to decide and register your donation decision on the Australian Organ Donor Register, and why family discussion and knowledge of donation decisions is vital.

Community Awareness Grants are available for activities that include a key event or activity held during DonateLife Week 2014. In addition, community groups may consider developing a program or activities that commence before or after the national awareness week, said Mr Neumann.

To further normalise family discussion about organ and tissue donation wishes I encourage schools, sporting clubs, businesses, community groups, universities and other organisations to apply. They play an important role in helping to normalise decision-making and discussion about donation decisions.

DonateLife Week (23 February 2 March 2014) is the national awareness week to promote organ and tissue donation, and is led by the Organ and Tissue Authority as part of the Australian Governments National Reform Agenda.

For applicants proposing targeted community-based awareness and education activities outside of DonateLife Week, activities should focus on engaging with communities to encourage Australians to discover, decide and discuss organ and tissue donation.

The Community Awareness Grants are provided by the Organ and Tissue Authority as part of its ongoing community awareness and education program. Applications are invited from non-government organisations and professional bodies, including community-based not for profit organisations or local government associations.

The closing date for applications is 5.00pm AEST Tuesday 23 July 2013. For details about the Community Awareness Grants and how to apply, visit the DonateLife website.
