CEO - Post Budget Message

We welcome the Governments continued focus on the importance of primary health care. The development of the Primary Health Networks (PHNs) with greater alignment to local health districts holds the promise of building on the work we have done as a Medicare Local with an even greater level of integration. We will take a lead role in influencing and guiding the formation of the new regional PHN.

Northern Sydney Medicare Local will continue to deliver high quality services to general practice, allied health professionals and the community until the transition to Primary Health Networks on 1 July 2015.The team will continue to work to ensure services across the primary, community and specialist sectors work together for better health outcomes.

Our key programs include Partners in Recovery which coordinates services for people with persistent mental illness, our Aboriginal Health Program which supports indigenous community members with chronic diseases and our After Hours program which helps people find medical help when they need it. NSML has administered $200,000 in grants to extend operating hours for a number of local practices. Our website also has information to local GPs and pharmacies with extended hours. You can find more information on key programs here.

Our annual plan based on our Comprehensive Health Needs Assessment is complete and we thank those who participated in its preparation. We conducted seven focus groups with over 50 local health professionals and surveyed approximately 400 consumers to identify health needs in our local government areas to design solutions for a healthier community.

The Health Minister has indicated a tender process to establish Primary Health Networks, which will be open to Medicare Locals and other public and private sector organisations. We are funded for another year to continue to provide the range of services and we are committed to ensuring that health professionals and residents in the region are not disadvantaged through any of the transition period.

On behalf of the NSML Board and Staff, we value our relationship with you and look forward to working with you to develop a model for a PHN in this region that meets the needs of all residents.

Thank you for your continuing support of NSML and we look forward to seeing you this weekend at ourNavigating Local Health Services Expo at the Epping Club.
