Bulk Billing Rates for GP Services Reach New Record High

Bulk billing rates for GP services reached a new record high of 82.4% in the March quarter the highest rate in Australias history.

Health Minister Tanya Plibersek welcomed the new record, saying that this figure contrasted sharply with only 67% when Tony Abbott was health minister.

The Gillard Government has invested and reformed the health system so that all Australians can have access to quality and affordable healthcare, Ms Plibersek said.

The Government is pleased bulk billing rates for GP services have reached record highs, said Ms Plibersek.

The March quarter figures show bulk billing for diagnostic imaging also reached a new record high of 74.9%; bulk billing of pathology services remains high at 87.6%.
Overall, bulk billing for all Medicare services remained high at 76.5%.

In total, $4.3 billion in Medicare benefits was paid for 81 million Medicare services during the quarter.
