PSA testing - weighing up the harms and benefits

PSA testing weighing up the harms and benefits

There is debate in Australia regarding the use of the prostate specific antigen (PSA) test for prostate cancer. A new resource is now available to help health practitioners discuss PSA testing with asymptomatic men who are considering undergoing the test.

The resource PSA Testing for Prostate Cancer in Asymptomatic Men: Information for Health Practitioners provides health practitioners with evidence-based information about the benefits and harms of PSA testing and of any follow-up investigations and treatments.

The resource was developed by the National Health and Medical Research Council and is based on their evaluation of the evidence, PSA testing in asymptomatic men: Evidence Evaluation Report.
