Opioid Treatment Accreditation Course: online workshop

The Opioid Treatment Accreditation Course is for medical practitioners in NSW interested in providing Opioid Substitution Treatment (OST) to opioid dependent patients. This online course runs from 14 July - 9 August and the face to face course will take place on 29 June at Sydney University.

Treatment of these patients is a challenging and stimulating experience for medical practitioners, and provides clear benefits to our community.

To prescribe opioids in NSW for Opioid Substitution Treatment (OST), including methadoneand buprenorphine, it is necessary to have satisfactorily complete the Opioid Treatment Accreditation Course. Potential prescribers then apply for approval from the Ministry of Health.

Participants are required to complete a workshop, either online or face to face, and thena half day clinical placement. Upon satisfactory completion of the course participants willbe able to:

1. Identify opioid dependence and related morbidity.
2. Assess a patient and negotiate a treatment plan.
3. Safely and effectively prescribe buprenorphine and methadone.
4. Outline the legal issues regarding the use of methadone and buprenorphine in the treatment of dependence.
5. Identify when and how to get support.
